This is a heavy brass reproduction of a Brunton style transit compass. Good oil rubbed style finishing. It does not work as a real transit compass, but it is not supposed to. Think decor, not measuring instrument. Mine points to magnetic north and that is about it. Seems to have all of the basic transit compass components, but I am not a transit compass expert. This thing is just super fun to play with. Will compare to a real transit compass and report back when I get a chance.

No complaints as to its build quality, and yes mine does work.My only complaint is that I was expecting a brass finish, as shown in the advertisement.But instead I was sent one with an anthracite paint job over the brass.

Nice and heavy. Good quality construction. Looks great. The finish on the one I received is much darker than pictured on Amazon. Very hard to see the markings as a result. The one I got is off by 9 degrees west. Important for any magnetic needle compass to keep it far away from anything metal if you want an accurate reading. The spirit levels are not accurate and the dome level is way off. Item description says it’s 2 1/2 inches. It’s not. It’s 2 1/4 inches. Other than that, if you’re looking for a shelf show piece it’s a good choice.
