I honestly was not expecting such a nice classic style compass for under $30 including tax.Nowadays, you'd probably be lucky to get the presentation box for $30.The box is actually milled from a sold block of black walnut. No joints, just two book matched solid chunks of wood hollowed out to fit the compass and hinged together with a compression closure pin to hold it shut.The two halves are from the same piece of wood so the grain perfectly matches.It would appear that the wood is natural and only polished.Yes, you can actually polish certain hardwoods.You can really tell it has been crafted with precision!Except... I do have one small complaint about the box.When they milled it out, the bit left a small lump in the middle of each side of the compass bed which they simple put some green pool table cloth over.They really should have sanded down these nubs.You can feel it on both halves of the box. Eventually, if carried often in it's box, these raised nubs would scratch the compass after the pool table cloth inserts wear through.I will replace this poll table cloth with some Royal Blue velvet that I have around here somewhere.Other than that issue, the compass is perfect, with just a smidge of green fuzz coming out of the rotation point of the chain ring.I freed it up a bit with a precision oiler. No big deal.At least this tells me it's solid brass, and not just plated.As far as packaging for shipping goes, I don't believe I've ever seen packaging like this in my life!The compass was wrapped in super tight plastic wrap and taped all around, then it had additional plastic jammed in between the compass and the box so it wouldn't rattle in transit, then the original box wrapping from the factory, then bubble wrap, then it was stuffed inside a corrugated box that was the exact fit for the compass box with the bubble wrap on it, and finally, the box was completely enshrouded in tape!Man! It took me 10 minutes just to get to the compass! Lol!It was just like getting a gift from one of your smart ass friends or family members that puts your gift in a box, in a box, in a box! Phew! What a chore! Well, it was kept safe in transit!Anyway, I'm very pleased with this nostalgic and simply elegant pathfinding chunk of brass!I would definitely buy another!A few side notes:It would have me nice if a chain were included, and if the needle tip was luminous. Of course, radium has no place in a classic compass, but it would be a nice touch.

This is an exceptionally nice piece. Very nice solid brass manufactured compass. Nice quality sturdy and solid. The Box comes in a really nice wood case beautiful wood! Really nice piece well made Solid good value for the money! I like it very nice peace.

I liked the look and feel of the compass, nice box. Not sure how accurate it is but my husbands says it is fairly accurate, points north. I bought as a gift for a momento rather than to use but still wanted a compass that pointed north.

Bought three of these and had them engraved as gifts for the ring bearers at my daughter’s wedding. Very attractive with their shiny brass case and little wooden box. The compass actually works too, although obviously this is not intended to be a functional navigation instrument. Makes a great gift though. Good buy at this price.

The compass came pretty quick. Its for sure worth the money you pay. But I don't think this is very practical for the field. Gonna see how my son takes care of it so I can see how good the next one will be for him. Asteticly, it is appealing to the eye. It feels solid. I like that Its fancy surounding simple. Very sophisticated look. But it points a bit off magnetic North so it isn't true. And you can't exactly reset a declination I don't think. So that is also a problem. I absolutely would not take this in the wild and hope it might save my life. I'd fallow the Sun and stars before an off compass. But this tho g really is nice. Nice box. Very sturdy and also beautiful built as well great color. It really would be a nice gift. It looks very good open in the open box of you have a kind of area for your hunting gear or man cave. Or a place for contimplation. Like I said it's almost true. So stationary is probably the best place for it. Worth the money. Well built. The three stars are for quality and visual appeal. The other two would have been for proper functionality.
