The bookends are made of a lovely sheer wood and the design is sturdy while being small and without creating bulk. Nothing gets in the way of being able to put these in even a small space. They are perfect and not cheap because well made and high quality materials. However, if you want to use them for coffee table sized books, you might want to get something taller. I wanted them for a small space but have now put them where they can be seen because the wood is so nice.

The 5" X 3" dimensions of the wooden end piece is perfect for CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray cases on shelving I made specifically for storing those items. The metal plate facing the shelf surface is firmly attached to the wooden piece and shows no signs of coming loose. CD cases sitting on it are raised only very slightly. If there is no "bookend" on the other end, or if there isn't a closed end on the shelf, CD cases will need to be tilted toward the ones sitting on the metal plate to keep them from falling over. These bookends look great on real wood shelving.
