Other members of our SAR teams in the county use this one, but we cheaped out at first and tried less expensive ones (from $5-18)...all of which failed either accuracy or function requirements. Between us and a few others, we compared about a dozen different mfrs and the Suunto always came out on top for reliability, accuracy, ease of use, and features. I really like the declination adjustment as it makes it easy to set our 11 deg once and not have to do the math on every azmuth we shoot. The MC-2 not only works reliably, it have other design features which made spending the money a no brainer. It's a lot lighter than my old military-style, lenzatic compass I was using.I used mine in low-light conditions practicing land-nav and the glow-in-the-dark portions of the compass which needed to glow, stood out very well, but needed to be saturated with light regularly, but I don't see that being something we will need much.If you are trying to decide about spending the money or not, to me, I say don't waste time, or money with the others. The couple other brands which passed the requirements for our SAR teams, still had minor things wbout them which put them down on the list of which one would I buy again, knowing what I know now.Lastly, I like how there is a Northern Hemishpere option and the different scale choices so I was able to get the model which best fit our needs. I did end up using a eyeglass screwdriver to adjust the declination as I didn't much like the little tool on the lanyard provided, but it is there for those who don't mind the 'fishing lure' tool. Come to think of it, it might work pretty good in my emergency wilderness kit, as a fishing lure!

As an avid hiker and backpacker as well as a member of our local SAR, I wanted a compass that I could really stake my life on - because when your in the wilderness, that's exactly what you are doing. This fits the bill - I wanted one for a while now and bought this with great expectations of the quality - and those expectations have been exceeded. Buy this compass and you will have it for your lifetime and it may well save your life somday. Can't get better!

I have used Silva Rangers and Suunto’s since 1972, and can tell you that, back then, as a Forest Technician, Silva Rangers were used tor precision cut block layout, Road lay out, and mapping. Suunto clinometers and Silva Rangers were used professionally. When I acquired my first Suunto MC-2, I was impressed by its quality and its great luminescence which made night navigation much easier. I noted that although, I was no longer in the Forestry business, many companies and militaries around the world, also used Suunto products. I’ll stay with Suunto.

This compass is accurate, easy to use, and still functions exactly as it should after many adventures in all four Canadian seasons. My only complaint is that the clip-on string necklace sometimes comes off by accident. Kinda strange design. Maybe it's a safety feature so you don't get hung up on a tree branch or something.Other than that, I would definitely buy this compass again if I lost or destroyed it. You don't really realize how important a quality compass is until you're out in the middle of nowhere when suddenly your phone stops working. It's not a piece of gear you should cheap out on.

It is exactly as advertised aside from the pictures showing the metric version. Oh well, I will carry a small clear metric ruler. The compass works beautifully and it arrived undamaged and on time.People saying it is useless in Canada are silly. Go to Walmart and buy a 6cm ruler 📏 or a small metric triangle 📐 to hang next to the compass. Just ensure they are clear plastic.Pro tip: don't forget to keep anything metal away from the compass as it will pull the needle away from magnetic north. This includes the adjustment key on the compass lanyard! Move the key onto you ferro rod striker or something.

I know they have a few other models... but this is the official compass for countless nations militaries, used by even more outdoors professional and veterans... and Suunto's best selling model for unknown number of years.Direct competition for this is the Silva Ranger. In recent years the Canadian Forces have moved from Silva to Suunto, several units within the US military are using the Suunto over the excellent Lensatic Compass (Cammenga), so it shows how well known and received the Suunto is just in North America.I own this model, as well as a Cammenga Lensatic, a Silva Ranger (older model) and a Brunton OSS. My 2 main compasses I use regularly are the Cammenga and Suunto. The Suunto has an ease of use that makes it a pleasure to work with. Comapred to the Cammenga, it does have several advantages, mostly the baseplate and markings on it. The clinometer is also a great feature to have, especially when on hilly/mountainous terrain. In my opinion, and after many years using Silva Rangers, this is by far the perfect compass to use with a topo map. As well, Suunto MC-2 is one of the rare compasses that can readily be used in extreme cold, due to it's liquid formulation that keeps from forming bubbles, which can be a pain during land nav.All in all, you won't regret picking up a Suunto MC-2, and more so now that some of the newer Silva Ranger models have gone down in quality over the older ones. This is honestly worth the money you'll pay for it.

Glad am I for deciding to spend a few extra dollars on this impressive Suunto compass. Their are just so many benefits with this indispensable instrument, but, to allude to a few of my personal favorites: i) the dial to read degrees is larger than the rest I've seen or had for that matter and this equates to more precise bearing readouts (I now get .5 readouts - e.g., 40.5 degrees); ii) the sighting mirror is a fantastic feature to ensure everything is aligned correctly (during triangulation); and iii) in other review forums, several have claimed to have used this Suunto compass in -18 to -30 degree weather without a problem.Dont forget about your declination (adjustment) or magnetic North will throw you off true North 100% of the time. Hint: Toronto is currently a 10W adjustment. The old saying is East is least (subtract), West is best (add). Therefore, for example, if you have a 90 degree reading in Toronto, you must then add 10 degrees since the Toronto declination is 10W, so your new & accurate bearing is 100 degrees. If you dont adjust for declination you will be off 100% of the time. My personal preference is to mentally work the math versus messing with the declination adjustment on the compass. Google "Isogonia chart", then click on Google images and you will find worldwide declination charts. FYI: the declination number will change every couple of decades. The bottom of your map will last say when declination was calculated. Also, if you are oblivious to "Triangulation" with a compass its worth your while to make the effort to learn. If you care about compasses, just buy this Suunto from Amazon.ca - this is a work of art.
