This is a really decent hand held in my opinion. Small and compact as well. Initially I had frustration as I couldn’t hit the local repeaters in my area, I was beginning to think the unit was not compatible in North America. I finally realized I simply just had to change the step frequency in the settings to 2.5kZ. Pro’s are are that it’s compact / small / clear audio on NOAA / AM air band audio is audible but slight static and its menu functions are easy to navigate through. This and its complete frequency range makes it hard to beat in price and other factors.

Works as it should, battery is very good. Very good starter unit for vhf and uhf amateurs.

bought this radio to use around my outdoor excursions. have been trying to hit repeaters locally,but have a hard time. compared the radio to my icom handheld,and the icom hears the repeater and shows 3/4 scale,where the uv-55 is deaf. sure it has some features and nice lcd and backlighting,BUT the antenna must be poor,or poor receive circuitry! most likely i will return this radio and purchase something with a better receiver1 too bad, i really wanted to like this radio................

I use this as a scanner for railfanning. I turned off all transmit options and loaded Egzumer v0.22 operating system so I could use a spectrum analyzer to see where other rail traffic is. For the price it is an amazing radio with incredible battery life, maybe a step up from my Baofeng UV-5R, which is also amazing.

It's a very decent radio for the price, once upgraded using an NA-771 whip and egzumer software. Without that, it's pretty limiting.
