Typically the magnet will fail first on this sort of compass. Initial review: looks great and seems well built, 5 stars for initially review and features

Indicates 180* in the wrong direction and the rotating magnetic disc is very sticky and hard to find the centre balance point to get it to move. Must be made for the southern hemisphere or something. Wish I had returned it right away, but waited too long because things got busy.

It appears the viscosity of the liquid inside the compass was getting higher when the temperature was below zero. The arrow was moving slowly and was getting stuck. It worked well at room temperature.

It is very well built and constructed. What I didn't understand why the compass can't find North everytime specially from the same location.

For those young folk who have never used a magnetic compass please look up magnetic declination. The magnetic north pole is not at the true north pole, so magnetic compasses don't point to true north like the one in your phone that has been adjusted according to your location. Not only that, the declination changes, so you need to be aware of the current declination in your area to calculate true north. Find something true north on your map. Sight it. And now you know the amount to add or subtract. This is a nice sturdy compass with an excellent sighting capability which allows for quite accurate readings of direction. No batteries required. Great for orienteering and navigating. There is also a clinometer, which is a good feature for sighting the angle to mountain tops or features that might help you locate yourself on a topographic map.My only complaint is that the clinometer does not move easily. It sticks, so it can be stuck a few degrees off. Tapping gets it to settle. There is also a rattle, partly from the clinometer and partly from the retractable loop. I don't like rattles.Nice gift for someone who enjoys the outdoors.
