About this item

  • X=MORE GAIN: The CL-X provides up to +36dB of ultra-clean gain in Max mode. Perfectly suited for using low-output microphones to capture quieter source material such as acoustic instruments, podcasting, ASMR, or even Foley.
  • MORE VIBE: We partnered with CineMag to develop a custom nickel transformer with huge bandwidth, adding the element of dynamic character. Combined with the ultra-clean gain of the Cloudlifter core, the CL-X is responsive to the signal you give it.
  • MORE OPTIONS: With the addition of the custom transformer, you may want to apply some of this “mojo” to additional applications. The selectable output attenuator allows you to decrease the gain from the CL-X, yielding up to 12dB, in order to capture louder applications such as an SM57 on a snare or loud guitar amp.
  • PLUG AND PLAY: The CL-X is compatible with dynamic, ribbon, and tube microphones – safe for all passive ribbons and does not pass phantom
  • MADE IN THE USA: All Cloudlifter electronics are made on the Navajo Nation in Arizona and entirely designed, manufactured and assembled in the USA. Transformer coupled design adds dynamic character that is responsive to the input level. Significantly reduces noise and unwanted artifacts by allowing the preamps to operate in a more comfortable range

The Cloudlifter X offers a custom-designed Cinemag transformer along with two selectable output levels that expand the range of output gain offered by the industry standard CL1. Featuring Cloud’s signature ultra-clean gain, the nickel-core Cinemag transformer delivers an incredible amount of bandwidth at normal input levels, and can also provide a variable amount of harmonic content and saturation as the input signal is increased, adding extremely musical flavors to the CLX’s output, which can change dynamically based on the input level of the source material.

I have a standard cloud lifter and wanted to see what doors this variable one would open with my collection of mics and wow…. This is an amazing tool! It creates so many new levels of character with mics of all kinds being vintage dynamics or new for that matter! It turns each mic into many! I am so excited to see what this can do with my entire mic locker. Exciting times ahead with tools like this! Selectable high pass filter first of all is great but the sweepable tone control with the variable impedance changes everything!!! In love!!! Thank you cloud

Whatever your setup, whatever the mic is, doesn't matter - these will increase performance.

This gadget is said to amplify the audio from your microphone to an external soundcard. Alas it does not work. Do not bother with this.

This is a very expensive rig for what it does. Especially if you need eight of them. Saying it can give up to 25dB gain is a stretch. It is really more like 20dB. Rodger Cloud explained that the actual gain you get depends on the input impedance of the equipment you are using. In my case it is the Tascam DP-24SD mixer/recorder with an input impedance of 2.7K ohms. I would be happier if it really did have 25 dB of gain, so only four stars. Signal to noise ratio is good but not amazing. I could have got a Tascam multi-channel preamp for less money but I didn't want an extra set of knobs to fiddle with during recording. However, the Cloudlifter is a better choice if you have long cable runs. Keep the cable between the mic and the Cloudlifter as short as possible for best results. Don't buy this unless you are using passive dynamic mics. It won't work with condenser mics.

If you have a weaker interface/mixer this is a must for your dynamic mic. I personally use it with a 1st gen 2i2 and Rode PodMic. Allows me to turn the gain way down while making my mic way louder. The sound is a ton better, it's crisp, loud, clean audio. The CL is way smaller than I thought too (which is good) Just plug it in and listen to the wonders it does.

This is a very high quality piece of equipment; tank tough and extremely reliable and effective. However, as others have pointed out, you have to be smart about its placement in an audio channel. -The dynamic mic I'm using connects at the end of 25' of XLR cable, and due to my own inexperience, I'd bought cheap cable (installed behind wall paneling, making it difficult to replace) which allows noise to introduce itself into the signal. When I put the Cloudlifter at the far end away from the mic, (I originally plugged it in just before the mixer), 25' of line noise was boosted along with the mic signal, so I got a horrid and loud extra buzz. Not cool!I despaired for a minute or two and then tried swapping the location of the Cloudlifter, plugging it in directly after the mic. That solved it; now only the voice signal is boosted, but the line noise is not, staying low and unnoticeable on the mixer end, -especially given that with the Cloudlifter I need much less gain on the mixer. The final signal is, to my ears, crystal clear. The simple fact is that high quality audio is expensive; to achieve a pro-level sound you need excellent mics and excellent cable and an excellent signal booster (like the Cloudlifter) -especially if you're using a dynamic mic; (mine is the Rode Procaster; an absolutely beautiful mic but which has a low volume output). All of that adds up in terms of cost, but the difference between a $60 audio channel and a $600 channel is night and day.I recommend this product heartily; swallow the one-time cost so you don't have to worry about it ever again.

I have a Shure SM7B I’m using with the Cloudlifter CL-1. Everything works as advertised and it’s very quiet as opposed to the ART MP Tube studio preamp I bought earlier elsewhere because I wanted to save money, I even replaced the tube to see if it would get quieter but nothing like the cloudlifter. My signal chain:SM7B > Cloudlifter > Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB interface (48v phantom power must be on) and into Logic Pro X.My vocals are now at 11 o’clock and they are clear, and I can really hear the true sound of the SM7B.Morale of the story, get the Cloudlifter and don’t mess around with cheaper solutions like I did. Buy cheap buy twice.

It works perfectly well. Most affordable audio interfaces cannot get clean signals from dynamic mics, especially if you're using it for recording something you'll further process in DAW. This cleans it up considerably, and it's made me appreciate my dynamic mics far more.As far as price, I haven't tried the cheaper options. This is highly recommended online, is built extremely well, and does exactly what it's supposed to. For that peace of mind, I don't mind the price.

I use a Shure SM-57 which is plugged into the CL-1, which in turn is plugged into my Focusrite audio interface. Without the CL-1 my microphone was too quiet for my friends on Discord to hear me correctly, but this device solved that problem for me easily. If you find your microphone is too quiet even with your dials turned up to 11, the CL-1 will do the trick. It requires phantom power to operate, however, so make sure your audio interface can utilize that!
