Off the bat, I was happy and hopeful that this would work. The status lights performed as expected and I thought I might have a unit that lasted.I went to change the battery out after a couple weeks (I used a large 9.0 AH DeWalt battery) and it showed 1/3 bars on the meter, which tells me that it did something for a while. When I tried to change out the battery, the unit was dead. No lights. No function. No current. Not sure why or what’s happened, but there is an obvious design flaw for so many of these to fail. It’s a great idea, but I won’t give it my recommendation until they fix the problem that causes the failures. Poor quality control, maybe? It’s also worth noting that these are made by a third party and sold under the DeWalt name, officially licensed. DeWalt doesn’t actually manufacture them.

No load the unit provides 14.4V. 1A should be plenty to maintain a battery even with todays onboard electronics due to the fact most ecu goes to sleep after a few minutes. If you have more than 300mA parasitic draw you might have an issue. One problem with this Dewalt tool is that when you remove the 20V battery, there is residual voltage and as some users have experienced you need to wait for it to dissipate or the unit goes into failsafe and stops working. The fastest way to change out a 20V battery is to use a resistor between the input connectors of the tool ( I use a 1K ohm). That will discharge the internal capacitor and that way you can then slip on a new battery, plug the OBD connector back and walk away. Dewalt should of designed it with a discharge circuit when you pull the battery off.Other than that it works just fine.

I bought this August 23 and today is December 20. I used it only 3 times and it worked well, on a truck I keep. Drained several DeWalt bats and the truck's battery was full after sitting 3 weeks. Today I was going to hook it up again, but light does not come on. Tried newly charged battery did not work. Tried on a different car, did not work!!I remembered that I did read a couple of reviews that it stopped working after a short time. I had thought it's DeWalt it must be only a few. - 3 times used for a total of 8 weeks actual usage and it's a dud.Do Not Buy.

It's too weak at 1 amp even to only maintain. When you change the 20v battery, it diesn't always come back on. You have to wait for a few hours for it too reset or something. Many people reported this. It was a great idea but very badly implemented. One of the very few DeWalt tool that I returned. Do not buy it.

This is such a great idea. We do a fair amount of batteries in our shop. Having to find and enter radio codes is a real PITA so we always need to lug the jumper pack over and put it in the car to keep the memory alive. This is so much better and it works! We have used it about 5 times now. The is one problem with it. If you plug in to the OBD2 port first then it goes into failsafe mode and wont work until some time passes and it resets itself. So install the battery pack 1st!
