As the cuishion is stuck on the flat wooden surface of the shoulder rest, it tends not to cut into the shoulder. Great design by fiddler shopThe Kun shoulder rest I have has a plastic edging throughout the shoulder rest into which the cushioning is inserted. Once the cushioning becomes softer with time, the plastic section starts poking the shoulder rendering the Kun shoulder rest not usable..

I play the violin and I'm in 10th grade. I really like the shoulder rest because it looks classy and clamps fold up so it's better for traveling to and from school in my backpack. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because the wood on the underside chipped off a little bit. I like that the feet are able to rotate so they fit the violin better and that it has a height adjustment for it too. I like the padding, it's comfortable but I wish it had a tiny bit more padding like my last shoulder rest. However, my last shoulder rest wasn't is dirty and the feet didn't fold up so I had two of them that both broke. This one has already lasted longer because the feet fold up. But I also got a zippered case that I can carry it in my backpack which I think helps. The best part about this though is that it looks really classy because it's made out of wood and that the feet fold up. Those are the two favorite parts about this. The folding feet are very important to me because my violin case doesn't allow me to have a spot to put my shoulder rest in it. Also I leave my violin at home and use the one at school to play so my shoulder rest is carried around in my backpack every single school day all day long.

I tried a few different brands. everst, kun. I find this one to be the kindest to the violin. the rubber feet are a medium soft material. Not as soft as the ones with the rubber tubing. But, these do not scratch. I scratched with the rubber tubing kind, b/c it does not cover the ends all the way and there is a metal or wooden peg inside. I found this to stay on. My Kun was rubber ended, and had the flexibility of adjusting 4 ways, but it fell off easily. It is soft on the shoulder and it is nice looking too. I do like that I can fit in in my case b/c it folds down. price is fair too. In general it takes some time to adjust should rests so that it is comfortable and holds your violin still on your shoulder. I feel like I can repeatedly put this on and use it without readjusting.

I bought two of these for my kids - while I don't use a rest, they are required to have one by their instructor. And while the instructor suggested using one of those thick car-wash sponges, I decided instead to get real shoulder rests. This is a real shoulder rest.I like that it's wood with foam padding, instead of all plastic or foam-on-metal. The wood adds a little je ne sais quoi to the rig. I found it easy to adjust, though I kind of wish the width adjustment were a sliding bracket instead of a choice of three holes on each side. The height is adjusted by screwing the attachment bracket up or down, and again I kind of wish that were a slider instead of a screw to make the adjustment a little more exact. That said, it fits both me and my kids perfectly, so those criticisms are pretty much academic. The brackets are made such that I'm not worried that they'll scratch the instrument, and the rest itself is really quite comfortable. My ear is not trained well enough to tell you if it robs the instrument of any tone or projection, but for the instruments they'll be fitted to (a Stentor II and a Cremona SV-175) that's not a prime consideration at this point. The takeaway here is that this is a very well designed and made shoulder rest, something that, like the instrument it supports, will last for years with proper care. I really like it a lot.
