I was hoping that it was of better quality than was advertised. It is still a very nice feeling instrument though. The minute scale reads 55 minutes ahead of the degrees on the arc. IE the drgees will read 30 and the minutes show 55 minutes. There is no vernier scale on the minutes drum so reading the seconds is very difficult. The shades are of poor quality and do not shade properly and they do not cover either the sun or the horizion, completely. How ever if you have students that you want to get the feeling of handling a sextant with out fear of damaging a real navigation instrument this would be an excellent choice, of if you want to set it on your shelf to look cool, this a great choice as there is no worry about damaging it or getting it out of alignment. Is it worth the $138.00+/- that I paid for it... I was not lied to but it is also not what I had hoped for. For my purposes it was not worth it. As a navigation instrument it is probably good enough if you don't mind a 600+ nautical mile error.At a later date.This order was shipped via UPS and the problems I have had with UPS are so great and if I I know an item is shipped via UPS, I won't buy it. Because of UPS I give it such a low rating

The sextant works fine and can definitely be used for a student or sailor on a tight budget. The construction however is far from perfect: one of the mirrors wobbled, I had to add rubber discs behind the mounting screws. The shades aren’t well aligned and I had to mess a lot with them (taking them off then mounting them differently) until I found a position where they work acceptably well. The whole thing is aluminum, so you got to be really careful with it… still, for the price it’s hard to complain. Just expect to have to do a bit of adjusting before you get it to work at your taste. Once all dialed in, if you don’t drop it it’s going to work OK

This is a good unit to learn how to take a sun sight with. Solid, with all required features. Not a toy or a 'display only' thing
