When I first bought this, I wasn’t sure how to calibrate it, but the seller was very helpful. As it turns out, the device is already calibrated accurately from the factory and even includes a “Reset” button to easily restore the default settings. It’s absolutely perfect for measuring car paint!

The reading results depend heavily upon how square you are to the surface. Will a small foot at the reading end, it's a challenge. Might be best set it on continuous mode and slightly tip it around to get the lowest reading. Same idea on convex/concave surfaces. The included calibration plates ensures confidence of the unit itself. I primarily use it for the delta(differences) readings rather than the absolute values.

What it is: Electronic paint thickness meter for ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic metals. Features LCD readout, unit switch (ųm, mm, mil), probe mode, zero button. Includes 2 AAA batteries, calibration samples, instructions, lanyard, and hard case.Why I like it: This is great for measuring coating thickness over metals. I calibrated the unit with the samples, put it in Auto mode, and it was able to detect paint thickness and distinguish metal types between the steel and aluminum bodywork on my RX-7. Instructions were clear, and I think this will be very helpful when monitoring paint thickness on my vehicles as well as detect potential body issues on vehicles I’m considering for purchase. Overall, very good tool for the home enthusiast or pro.

Excited to receive it. Shipped overnight. Unit would not power up. Yes, batteries were inserted correctly. I swapped the batteries with my own known new batteries. Unit still does not power up. Will be shipping it back ASAP...

to get a consistent reading is a challenge. after using the meter for a while i can get better results but if you want better more reliable readings i'd opt for a better meter/gauge.
