This was a time-sensitive gift for a good friend, so returning it was not an option. As you can see in the pictures there is what I can only assume is a solder joint on the bezel of the compass face. It is so poor that it looks and feels like a chuck of volcanic rock melted to the surface. It was really disappointing to see that, because other than that (and the misspelled word "CALENDER" on the exterior) it has quite a nice look and feel to it. I'm not sure if it was a one-off or whether all the product has this glaring defect in the bezel, but what a letdown.

I recently redid my study in a pirate theme and this compass was a nice addition. It looks old and the quality is great. The compass looks like it could have been on Calico Jack Rackam’s desk. And by the way, it actually works as a compass.

the calendar works and the compass needle can be locked in place. given how jumpy the needle is, I doubt it would work as a useable compass. good for creating a vignette in decor. price was reasonable for the look and features.
