The item is clearly used or returned. Long scratches, the coating under the ruler is faded, obviously a sign of being used due to sliding the compass on a surface. The product - solid construction, the bezel is too easy to rotate may accidentaly move while navigating. There should be some resistance like in Suunto compass to prevent unintentional moving of the bezel. But still recommended.

Frustrating and difficult to adjust the declination the first time. Seems to work fine eventually. No excuse for Brunton not to address this before shipping.

Overall: worth it.Adjusting declination on this is NOT as hard as people make it out to be. Compass is sturdy. Pinch and turn the grey rubber edge of the compass and the declination can be adjusted with a reasonable amount of force. Anyone breaking out pliers is probably not doing it right.Agree the white label on the declination readings might come off in the field, but no need to remove it to adjust.Needle has good vibration dampening.

I really wanted to like this compass after buying a cheapo compass in the less than 10 dollar range and an outdoor store mentioned it. My daughter has a Science Olympiad competition and needed a compass that included declination settings to take that calculation out of the already challenging learning curve to using a compass and map in just a few sessions. I also like that it was made in the USA. Once it arrived, the disappointment began, however. I couldn't find instructions on how to set the declination in the package that was sent. I had to google for the instructions. Others had complained about the difficulty of setting the declination and after an hour of following the instructions to a "t", it didn't budge. I even resorted to using vice-grips to try and get the pressure right in order to get the housing to move opposite the declination markings. I don't give up easily and in this case, it's just not worth it. So I plan on returning it.If you don't care about declination, I'd say this is a nice compass, but otherwise, perhaps look for another.Same day update: What started out as a vent about a poorly made and misleadingly advertised product has turned around. After finding out that the seller of the compass (not Amazon) had a very restrictive return policy, I decided to give it one last shot (after an hour of trying) to try and get the declination unstuck. I didn't care if I broke it, bc I was basically stuck with it anyhow. And it worked! Now moves simply but with a concerted pinch between the fingers. So, basically, I think the housing was either stuck with friction or more likely some extra glue. So, first, take off the white donut suction backing and set aside. Take a thickish cloth like an old t-shirt and protect all contact points with the compass. Put one plier on the back center of the compass and gently squeeze. Remove and try pinching the center of the compass with fingers and move the housing again. If still stuck, try again and squeeze a little harder. You might even try to move the housing while you're squeezing the pliers. At some point, if it's like mine, it will unstick and you'll be amazed at how it turns by pinching it between your fingers. Then reapply the white backing.I'm changing review to 5-star, because it's close to the cheapest compass out there with a declination setting.

Forget the included instructions on making a declination adjustment, one of the most clumsy descriptions I can remember reading. What they needed to say was that the compass cartridge must be turned relative to the surrounding black ring, and you are supposed to do that by pinching the cartridge with the thumb and forefinger of one hand while holding the black ring grip with the other hand, turning the two in opposite directions. On my compass, the fitting is too tight to budge without considerable struggle and pain. I'm up to 11 degrees east declination, need to attain nearly 14 degrees, can't get there. My hands are cramping, my fingertips are raw, and I'm wishing for a tool to budge this tool-less design. The idea only works if the manufacturing tolerances prevent excessive friction that can't be overcome without leverage. I think pliers would cause damage. The compass cartridge simply fits too tight in its housing.Furthermore, the declination scale on the bottom is visible only because there is a white plastic backing on the underside of the cartridge. When you try to make the adjustment this backing is wrenched from its position, and you discover that it is kept in place by suction adhesion, easily peeling off. But if you need to adjust the declination for some other location, besides having to struggle again, you will need to keep track of this backing and hope it doesn't fall off, or you won't be able to see the declination scale.UPDATE: I returned the product to Amazon and promptly got a replacement. The declination adjustment felt as tight as before, but it would budge. I can understand the need for a tight fit so the adjustment won't loosen. It's a struggle and you can't see what you are doing while using considerable force with two enclosing hands, but eventually you can get it adjusted. Added a star because I bought this compass wanting to like it.
